Bob Poling
Every Monday, Bob Poling can be found volunteering at our Historical Library and Archival Center, where visitors explore local genealogy resources and learn about Hilliard's rich history.
When asked what brought him to Hilliard, Bob shared that he and his wife decided to move here in May of 2018, to be closer to their daughter. Sadly, just fourteen months after the move, Bob’s wife passed away from cancer. Despite the loss, Bob found comfort in Hilliard’s welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. "It allowed me to be closer to my grandkids," he said. "I drove my grandsons back and forth to school, so I got to know them better."
When asked if he would like to see any changes in Hilliard, Bob noted, “The rapid growth is good and bad. They're expanding the school system, seniors will soon have a new center on the west side (The Well), and there’s just a lot happening. Hilliard’s the place to be.”
According to membership records, Bob joined the Historical Society in 2019. He first learned about the Historical Village when he overheard a conversation between Tim Woodruff’s daughter, Kay (a neighbor of Bob’s daughter Karen), discussing upcoming activities. That summer, at a picnic hosted by Kay, Bob met Tim and Penny Woodruff, who told him more about the village which got him interested enough to join.
Since then, Bob has loved being part of the community. He enjoys the friendliness of the village and his role as a docent. "It’s a fun thing to do, and I get to meet new people," he shared. Bob appreciates how things are running at the Society and joked, "The only thing I’d like to see is the church bell fixed!"
During our visit, Bob also shared an interesting story: earlier that day, two brothers named Daniels stopped by. They had grown up in Hilliard and once lived in the very house that now serves as our library. They took a short walk down memory lane before leaving.
Bob said volunteering at the Historical Society has made him a happier and more active person. "The Historical Society is a great place to work," he concluded.
In addition to his work with us, Bob is also active with the Knights of Columbus.
