Mary Vulic

For more than five decades, this longtime resident has watched Hilliard grow while maintaining the character that first drew her here. Mary began teaching French and English at Hilliard High School in 1972, beginning a career that would connect her deeply to the community. In 1990, she and her family purchased land in Brown Township and built their home, embracing the unique balance of rural openness and convenient access to the amenities of both Hilliard and nearby Columbus. They have now called the area home for 25 years.

What Mary appreciates most about Hilliard is that blend of countryside charm and city convenience. She feels confident that the people of Hilliard—those with talent and vision—continue to guide the city in a positive direction. While she occasionally offers her perspective, she trusts the community’s leadership and engaged residents to keep moving Hilliard forward.

Her connection to the Hilliard Ohio Historical Society (HOHS) began five years ago. A lifelong lover of history - especially historical novels and visiting historic places - she was encouraged to join through a thoughtful outreach effort by the HOHS membership committee. That invitation sparked a meaningful new chapter of service.

What stands out most to her about HOHS is the people. Mary values the energy, dedication, commitment, and depth of knowledge demonstrated by active members. She also treasures her encounters with visitors, particularly while serving as a docent for school groups, during HOHS events, and at the county fair. Meeting with visitors and sharing Hilliard’s story has become one of the most rewarding aspects of her volunteer work.

Mary believes HOHS can continue to strengthen its impact by welcoming more diverse members and exhibits, and by expanding communication efforts through newsletters, the website, signage, and features in local media outlets and e-letters. Continued outreach, she feels, will help ensure that the community’s history reaches an even broader audience.

Personally, HOHS has meant meaningful involvement in and stewardship of a true community treasure. Through her service, Mary has found both purpose and connection.

Beyond HOHS, she is very active at Amlin United Methodist Church and enjoys fellowship at the Hilliard Senior Center, where she plays cards, shares lunches, and participates in trips. In her free time, she enjoys reading, bowling, swimming, biking, and, as a self-described total Francophile, embracing all things French—a passion that has clearly shaped both her career and her life.
