John Gabriel
A Century of Music, Service, and History:
When you meet John Gabriel, it doesn't take long to understand why he has been such a valued member of the Hilliard Ohio Historical Society. At 100 years young, John has lived a remarkable life of service—to his country, to education, to his church, and to preserving the history of the community he has proudly called home for nearly seven decades.
After graduating from high school, John served in the U.S. Navy before enrolling in The Ohio State University School of Music. He married his wife, Dotty, on Christmas Eve in 1946, graduated in 1950, and began his teaching career at the Kamehameha School on Oahu, Hawaii, where he taught music for six years.
In 1957, John and Dotty returned to Ohio and settled in Hilliard, purchasing an $11,000 home in the Avery Addition through the GI Bill. The affordable housing first drew them to Hilliard, but it was the welcoming community, Hilliard United Methodist Church, excellent schools, and the many fellow veterans raising young families that convinced them they had found the perfect place to call home.
John remembers a much different Hilliard than we know today. The railroad station was still an active part of everyday life, and before the Cemetery Road overpass was built in 1977, motorists regularly waited as trains passed through town. He and Dotty raised their three sons—Steve, Bruce, and Jim—while in Hilliard before moving to nearby Galloway in 1968, where they continued raising their family.
Music remained the centerpiece of John's professional life. He taught throughout the Southwestern City School District, traveling among its elementary schools before becoming music director at Pleasant View High School. At the same time, he directed the choir at Hilliard United Methodist Church for an impressive 26 years. He retired from teaching in 1985 after inspiring countless students through music. John joined the Hilliard Ohio Historical Society in 1988 and quickly became an active volunteer. A Life Member of the Society, he served on several committees and spent many years as a museum docent before the museum addition was completed in 2004. One of his greatest joys was welcoming school children to the Historical Village and sharing the stories that bring Hilliard's past to life.
Reflecting on his years with the Society, John says his involvement taught him a tremendous amount about Hilliard's history, introduced him to many lifelong friends, and gave him the opportunity to work with people throughout Franklin County. He believes Hilliard has always had more to offer visitors than many neighboring communities and credits the Society for helping preserve that rich heritage. Looking ahead, John feels the Historical Society's greatest opportunity is increasing public awareness. "There is a lot going on in Hilliard that people would be interested in if they just knew about it," he says.
He also appreciates the City's continued support of the Historical Village and values the Society's strong partnership with the Franklin County Fair, which he believes continues to bring many visitors to the community.
Even at 100 years old, John remains mentally active by tackling crossword puzzles and keeping up with local news in the newspaper. His resilience is equally inspiring—he successfully underwent heart valve replacement surgery at the age of 99. After 79 years of marriage, he lovingly cared for Dotty until her passing, a testament to the devotion that has characterized his life.
The Hilliard Ohio Historical Society is grateful for John Gabriel's many years of dedication, volunteer service, and enthusiasm for sharing Hilliard's story. His century of life reminds us that preserving history is ultimately about preserving the people whose lives shaped our community. Through his commitment to education, music, and local history, John has left a lasting legacy that continues to inspire all who know him.
